Extraction Project

Work continues on the collaborative project with artist, Brooke Holve while I’m currently in Somerset England and Brooke is in Sebastopol California.

Some of the project is complete and stored at Brooke’s studio.

The Seager Gray Gallery in Mill Valley will show the work in July 2021 if all goes according to plan during this ongoing pandemic.

I am researching into some of the minerals mined for our devices and used in alternative energy. It is my aim to give a visual language to the mining of Rare earth elements and conflict minerals and /or mining practices that engages and informs the viewer.

I love the process of discovering a trail of information as each inquiry leads to another. A rich sequence of questions. This project deepens my fascination with the magical properties in the substance that lays in the depth beneath our feet. Man has miraculously developed the raw commodities of the earth to create the devices we all now depend on. The dark side is evident in the destruction this mining causes. How do we maintain a balance?

This time of outpouring of protests and support for the black community in The USA following George Loyd’s death by police brutality is momentous in that it promises change against racist police brutality and inhumane acts of violence against our fellow citizens.

This is an opportunity to support a cause (the consciouskid.org) that will start the conversation early in a child’s life while adding to or starting your art collection.

I have chosen to donate to this particular charity after witnessing a 7 year-old inflict racist remarks on his black class mate until the young black boy broke down in tears, heartbreaking! The other kids, in shock, did not understand what was happening enough to stand up for their black friend. This Anti-Racist discussion has to begin early in life too.

Small Works, paintings, art on paper, showing at Think Visual Gallery

This is a fun little show in a quaint coastal town on north coast of California in Mendocino County.

A tight friendly and eclectic community with a fine range of small businesses.

Lis Gladstone who lives at Sea Ranch and myself are collaborating on a show called Latitude 38.90 N as it’s mostly work that is influenced by this latitude and its coastal geography. Everything will be priced low (from $75- $500. Opening reception is March 13th 5-7pm and fired up by a band of local musicians.

The exhibition dates are March 10th to April 4 @ Think Visual Gallery 240 Main St. Pt Arena CA.

Collaborative project, California to Ireland

My fascination with geological forces that create landscapes have brought me to a collaborative project with artist Brooke Holve. We met over our common interest in Iceland, the country and it’s wild and pristine landscape. We have both spent 1 month at art residencies in separate years in the southwest part of the island plus touring visits in other years, Brooke has visited there 4 times and I twice.

One of our projects is tracing rare earth elements and minerals, used to power smart phones, to their sources.

We look at changing landscapes as these commodities are extracted for industry. What is happening on earth’s surface while the underworld is exposed and required. These paintings are inspired from shapes that make up the components inside of an iPhone.
